The Berkshire-backed builder growing in Richmond.
Mungo Homes was founded in South Carolina in 1954 and is now owned by Clayton Properties Group, the homebuilding arm of Clayton, a Berkshire Hathaway company. It came to Richmond by buying local builder CraftMaster Homes in 2021 and rebranded to Mungo in 2024, and it has been in growth mode here since. It builds the widest price range on this list, from $269,000 townhomes to $600s single-family.

Their team sells the homes. We work only for you, if you want that.
Mungo Homes’s on-site team knows these communities and will work with you directly if you prefer. Want your own representation instead? We protect your registration on day one, walk the lot with you, press for incentives and closing-cost help, review the contract and design-center pricing, and inspect at pre-drywall and final. Because Mungo Homes typically pays the buyer’s agent, this usually costs you nothing, confirmed in writing before you sign. Here are the pros and cons of having your own agent.
Transparency note. Mission Realty is an independent brokerage and is not affiliated with Mungo Homes. Mungo Homes does not pay to be featured here. If that changes, this line will say so.

Honest answers, builder-neutral. We keep these current through the monthly refresh.
Is Mungo Homes a good builder?
Mungo brings a long Southeastern track record and the backing of Berkshire Hathaway’s Clayton, with one of the widest price ranges in the market, from genuinely affordable townhomes to golf-course and master-planned single-family. Because it is newer to Richmond (it rebranded from CraftMaster in 2024), it is worth asking about the local team’s track record, and as always, budget for your own inspections.
Can you negotiate with Mungo Homes?
Mungo puts incentives on its move-in-ready homes and offers lender buydowns, and because it is actively growing market share here, it has reason to be competitive. Base prices on to-be-built homes move less. We track what Mungo is offering in Richmond each month.
Do you need your own agent to buy a Mungo Homes home?
No. Mungo Homes’s on-site team will work with you directly, and many buyers go that route. You can also bring your own agent, and because Mungo Homes, like most production builders, typically pays the buyer’s agent, having your own representation usually costs you nothing. We lay out the pros and cons of each path, and what each costs you at the design center and at closing, in a separate guide.
Is Mungo Homes the same as CraftMaster Homes?
Yes. Mungo entered Richmond by acquiring the local builder CraftMaster Homes in 2021 and rebranded the operation to Mungo Homes in 2024. If you remember CraftMaster communities, those are now Mungo. The leadership is local even though the parent company is national.
Where does Mungo Homes build in the Richmond area?
Across the region: Henrico, Chesterfield (Midlothian and Moseley), Goochland, New Kent, Hanover (Mechanicsville), and King William (Aylett). Prices run from the $260s for King William townhomes to the high $600s for larger single-family homes, so the right Mungo Homes community depends a lot on which part of the region you want and what you want to spend.
