Day Trip From Richmond to Charlottesville: Monticello, the Downtown Mall and Wine Country in About an Hour

Charlottesville is about 70 miles west of Richmond, and on a good day it is a little over an hour door to door. That makes it one of the best fall day trips from the capital: Thomas Jefferson’s home, a walkable historic downtown, a university campus and a wine trail with more than 40 wineries, all within a few miles of each other. This guide lays out the drive, what Monticello costs, how to fit downtown and a winery into one day, and when to time the trip around the Virginia Film Festival.

The Drive: I-64 West

You take I-64 West out of Richmond, passing through the western edge of Short Pump and then through Goochland County, where the road turns rural, before crossing into Fluvanna and Albemarle counties. Expect roughly an hour and ten minutes without traffic. Fridays and Sunday afternoons can be heavy. Check VDOT’s 511 Virginia for construction and incidents before you leave. If you commute or travel between the two cities often, you might like our guide to what to know when moving to Richmond from Charlottesville, which compares the two markets.

Monticello: Tickets, Tours and Timing

Monticello, at 1050 Monticello Loop, is the anchor stop. According to Monticello’s visit page, the most popular option is the Highlights Tour, a 45-minute small-group tour, priced at $42 for adults, $13 for ages 12 to 18, $4 for ages 5 to 11, and free for children under 5. A grounds-only ticket is $22 for adults, $8 for ages 12 to 18, and $2 for ages 5 to 11. Other tours include Behind the Scenes ($105), Founding Friends, Founding Foes ($42), a Family Friendly Tour ($42), From Slavery to Freedom ($42) and Women at Monticello ($42), plus private guides and Holiday Evening Tours at $99 that begin later in the season. The site lists membership benefits and discounts for military, Museums for All and local university programs. Prices and tour availability change, so book on its site, and book ahead on weekends in October when demand peaks.

Plan on about two to three hours if you take a tour and walk the grounds and gardens. If you are only doing a half day, the Highlights Tour plus a slow walk around the gardens is a full, satisfying visit. The From Slavery to Freedom tour is a good choice if you have time for a second tour.

Downtown Mall and the University of Virginia

After Monticello, head to the Downtown Mall, a pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bookstores and shops that runs for several blocks through the heart of the city. It is a good lunch stop and easy to do on foot. Charlottesville’s visitor bureau describes the mall as a hub for seasonal events and holiday activities. From there, a short drive gets you to the University of Virginia Grounds and the Rotunda, which Jefferson designed. The campus is open for walking, and the lawn is especially pleasant in October.

Like what you see west of Richmond?

The same I-64 corridor runs through Short Pump and Goochland, where homes get larger and prices shift. Set up a saved search for homes along the west side of the region and we will send new listings that fit.

Wineries and Orchards

The Monticello Wine Trail has more than 40 wineries in the area, according to Visit Charlottesville, and the visitor bureau also points to pumpkin picking at local orchards and farms in the fall. If you plan to taste, have a designated driver and reserve your tasting ahead, because popular wineries book up on weekends. Pick one or two rather than a crawl: three stops can easily eat most of your afternoon. Orchards sell apples and cider in season, and many take walk-ins on weekdays.

The Virginia Film Festival, October 21-25

The Virginia Film Festival returns October 21 through 25, 2026, with screenings across the Downtown Mall and the UVA Grounds, per Visit Charlottesville. If you want the festival atmosphere, that is the week to go, but book parking and lodging early and expect the downtown to be crowded. If you would prefer a quieter trip, go a weekend earlier or later. The foliage in the surrounding hills is usually at its best in the second half of October.

How to Fit It Into One Day

A workable itinerary: leave Richmond by 8 a.m., arrive at Monticello for a 10 a.m. tour, be on the Downtown Mall for lunch by 12:30, spend an hour at UVA or a winery, and leave Charlottesville by 4 p.m. to be back for dinner. If you want to add the Blue Ridge, Rockfish Gap is where Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway meet, west of Charlottesville, but that makes the day much longer. Bringing It Back to Richmond

Day trips like this are a reminder that the Richmond region has access to the mountains, the coast and the Piedmont within about an hour or two.
