Commonwealth Autism, the nonprofit that owns Good Foods Grocery at 3062 Stony Point Road in South Richmond, has launched a coffee cart training program and is in the early stages of planning a second store, according to Richmond BizSense. Reporter Jack Jacobs covered the news in an October 26 article. This post is our own summary, with local context added. More coverage lives in our Richmond area news posts.
The coffee cart program
The program is called Brewing Opportunities and is the newest offering from the nonprofit’s Career Readiness and Employment program, per BizSense. Participants run a branded coffee cart that began operating at Good Foods in mid-October and is active on Tuesdays. Starting in January the cart is planned to set up at other locations, and corporate partners have expressed interest in hosting it. The program aims to train up to eight adults a year, giving people with autism small-business and customer-service experience.
It cost $25,000 to launch, mostly funded by a $20,000 Windsor Foundation grant. Scott’s Addition-based Afterglow Coffee helped with planning, training and equipment but does not sponsor or fund the program, per BizSense. Our Scott’s Addition page covers that neighborhood.
The second store
No location has been chosen. CEO Tyler Hart told BizSense the group is “investigating and looking around,” and that it could buy an existing local specialty grocer or build a new store of about 2,500 to 4,000 square feet. As of the report it was not in active acquisition talks with any Richmond-area specialty store, and it declined to say whether it is interested in Ellwood Thompson’s. Hart hopes to open a second store within two years, and a fundraising campaign would be needed. BizSense also covered the nonprofit’s 2023 purchase of the grocery, and the organization’s own site is commonwealthautism.org.
What it means for buyers near Stony Point
This is a plan, not an opening, and BizSense reports no site, date or address for a second store. It also reports nothing about home prices, and we have seen no data tying the program or the plan to them.
