Richmond-Area Neighborhoods Near the Richmond National Battlefield Park Sites

Nobody publishes a clean dataset of home sales sorted by distance to a Civil War battlefield, so this guide does not rank neighborhoods by price or appreciation. It uses something you can check yourself: the National Park Service’s own list of site addresses for Richmond National Battlefield Park, matched to the communities where Mission Realty has pages. Every pick below rests on an address, a trail, a visitor center or a road that you can look up.

This is a different question from our guide to neighborhoods next to a major park, which is about living beside a large green space, and from our look at neighborhoods near the James River parks, which centers on the river. Here the anchor is history: federally managed battlefields, forts and a museum scattered across the region.

What the park is, and where it actually sits

Richmond National Battlefield Park is not one place. The National Park Service describes it as a collection of park units scattered across Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield counties and the city of Richmond. Its GPS address list names these destinations: Beaver Dam Creek, Chickahominy Bluff, Chimborazo Medical Museum, Cold Harbor, Drewry’s Bluff (Fort Darling), Fort Harrison, Gaines’ Mill, Malvern Hill, Parker’s Battery, and Totopotomoy Creek at Rural Plains.

That matters for a home search because “near the park” has no single meaning. A buyer close to the Chimborazo Medical Museum and a buyer close to Malvern Hill live on opposite sides of the region, and neither is close to the other’s trails. The honest way to use the park in a search is to pick the site you would actually visit, then work outward from its address.

How these five picks were chosen and ordered

The order is geographic, not a ranking: the city first, then eastern Henrico County, then north into Hanover County, then south into Chesterfield County. Any other order would be arbitrary, so we are not pretending to one. Each pick uses three things we could verify: the NPS street address of a site, what the NPS says is at that site, and the nearest Mission Realty community page. “Nearest” is our judgment from a map, not a measured catchment area, and we say so where it matters.

We did not use prices, days on market or school scores. Hours and site status change, so confirm anything you plan a trip around at nps.gov/rich before you drive out.

Church Hill: the park’s headquarters museum is inside the city

The park’s headquarters and the Chimborazo Medical Museum share one address, 3215 East Broad Street, Richmond 23223. Chimborazo became one of the Civil War’s largest military hospitals. The hospital is gone, but the museum on the grounds holds original medical instruments, a scale model of the hospital and a short film, according to the NPS Places To Go page. The visitor centers page adds a 17-minute orientation film.

Church Hill is the closest of our community pages, and the appeal for this list is simple: the park’s main staffed visitor center is in the city, not a county drive away. The NPS FAQ page names it, along with the Cold Harbor visitor center, as the best place to start a visit.

Who it is wrong for: anyone hoping to step out the door onto a battlefield trail. Chimborazo is a museum and visitor center. The walking trails the NPS describes are at the outlying units, so Church Hill buyers who want trails will be driving into Henrico, Hanover or Chesterfield.

Sandston: about nine road miles from Fort Harrison

Fort Harrison Battlefield and Visitor Center is at 8621 Battlefield Park Road, Richmond 23231. The NPS directions say to take exit 22B off I-295 for New Market Road west, then turn left on Battlefield Park Road. The NPS describes a seven-mile drive linking several key sites along Richmond’s outer defenses, with short walking trails inside Fort Harrison and Fort Brady, and calls it the most suitable spot in the park for bicycling.

From Sandston in Henrico County, a Google Maps route we checked in October 2026 showed about 8.9 miles by road via South Laburnum Avenue, or 11.7 miles via I-295 south. Treat those as a starting point rather than a promise, because routing shifts with traffic and construction.

Who it is wrong for: anyone who wants a five-minute trip. Sandston is a drive to every NPS site, and the park itself is geared more toward visitors on foot or bike than commuters.

Varina: the closest page we have to Fort Harrison and Malvern Hill

Two units share the 23231 ZIP in the NPS address list: Fort Harrison at 8621 Battlefield Park Road and Malvern Hill Battlefield at 9175 Willis Church Road. The NPS calls Malvern Hill “the best preserved battlefield in the Richmond area,” with a walking trail of nearly two miles reachable from two parking lots.

Varina is the Henrico County community page that covers that side of the county, again by our reading of the map. The NPS lists the Fort Harrison visitor center as closed for 2026, so the orientation stop is unavailable this year; check the park’s alerts page before heading out for the earthworks and trails.

Who it is wrong for: buyers who want to leave the car at home. Both sites are destinations you drive to, and the NPS describes the Fort Harrison area as a seven-mile drive, not a walk.

Hanover: three battlefields around Mechanicsville

This is the densest cluster of sites. Using the NPS address list: the Cold Harbor Battlefield and Visitor Center is at 5515 Anderson-Wright Drive, Mechanicsville 23111; Gaines’ Mill is at 6283 Watt House Road, Mechanicsville 23111; Beaver Dam Creek is at 7423 Cold Harbor Road, Mechanicsville 23111; and Totopotomoy Creek at Rural Plains is at 7273 Studley Road, Mechanicsville 23116.

The NPS calls Cold Harbor the best-known battlefield in the park, with a one-mile drive past original 1864 entrenchments and walking trails from one mile to nearly three miles. Gaines’ Mill has a one-mile trail along Boatswain Creek. Beside the Garthright House, Hanover County runs its own Cold Harbor Park with a walking trail and picnic area. The staffed Cold Harbor visitor center lists hours of 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM Wednesday through Sunday and is closed Monday and Tuesday, per the NPS visitor centers page; that page was last updated May 1, 2026, so confirm before you go.

The Hanover community page is our match for this area. We do not have a stand-alone Mechanicsville page, so the Hanover page, which points to a Mechanicsville guide, is the closest link.

Who it is wrong for: anyone who wants every site in one stop. These are separate addresses with separate trails, so a full day means driving between them.

Chesterfield: Drewry’s Bluff and Parker’s Battery south of the James

Drewry’s Bluff (Fort Darling) is at 7600 Fort Darling Road, Richmond 23237. The NPS says the fort survives intact, with a one-mile walking trail and a viewing platform over the James River. Parker’s Battery is at 1801 Ware Bottom Spring, Chester 23831, on the edge of the Bermuda Hundred peninsula between Richmond and Petersburg, with a short walking trail through original fortifications.

Chesterfield is the community page we link for this side of Chesterfield County. We do not have a Chester page, so the county page is the closest honest match for Parker’s Battery.

Who it is wrong for: anyone who wants both southern sites on one outing. Drewry’s Bluff and Parker’s Battery are separate addresses with different ZIP codes (23237 and 23831).

Before you narrow the search

Pick the single site you would visit most often and drive from the neighborhood to its NPS address at the time of day you would really go, on a weekday and a weekend. A listing that looks close on a map can be a very different trip once I-295 or a county road backs up. If you are still working out your budget, our preferred lenders can walk you through pre-approval, and our buyer process page shows how a search with us works.

One more check that costs nothing: if a listing sits near NPS land, look at the plat and the county map for what actually borders the lot.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an entrance fee for Richmond National Battlefield Park?

No. The National Park Service states that there is no entrance fee to visit Richmond National Battlefield Park.

How long does it take to tour the battlefields?

The NPS recommends setting aside anywhere from a half-day to a full day to tour the park’s battlefields, because the units are spread across several counties.

Can I ride a bicycle at the park?

The NPS says the park is geared more for foot traffic than bicycle traffic, but the Fort Harrison unit, located off Route 5, is very popular with bikers. It is seven miles long with a 25-mile-an-hour speed limit, and most riders park at the Fort Harrison visitor center parking lot.

Does the park have programs for kids?

Yes. The NPS offers a Junior Ranger program that can be requested at any of the park visitor centers.

Can I buy an Interagency or Senior Pass at the park?

No. The NPS says Richmond National Battlefield Park does not sell the Annual Interagency Pass or the Senior Pass, and points visitors to a list of sites that do.

When are ranger-led activities offered?

The NPS says ranger-conducted activities take place in the summer at various sites around the park. Ranger programs at the Cold Harbor visitor center are described as daily during the summer season.

Does living near a battlefield change what a home sells for?

We have no dataset that isolates that effect, so we will not guess at one. What you can check is what actually borders the lot, whether the property sits on a county road or a private lane, and how long the drive to your chosen site takes at the hours you would use it.
