Best Richmond-Area Neighborhoods Near a Major Hospital: Henrico Doctors’, St. Mary’s, Chippenham, Johnston-Willis and VCU Medical Center

No clean dataset ranks home sites by hospital access, so this guide does not pretend to. It uses proxies you can check yourself: each hospital’s published street address, the roads between it and a neighborhood, and the road mileage from the approximate center of the neighborhood. The order below follows the hospitals, roughly from the West End to downtown. It is not a ranking, and it says nothing about the quality of care at any hospital.

Distance to a hospital is also a different thing from emergency response. In an emergency, call 911. What follows is for buyers who want a short, known route to one of the region’s large campuses as one factor among many.

The five hospitals and where they actually sit

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital lists its address as 1602 Skipwith Rd, Richmond, VA 23229. Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital is at 5801 Bremo Road, Richmond 23226, according to Bon Secours. Chippenham Hospital gives 7101 Jahnke Rd, Richmond 23225, and Johnston-Willis Hospital gives 1401 Johnston Willis Dr, Richmond 23235. VCU Medical Center is downtown on the MCV campus: its North Hospital is at 1300 E. Marshall St., the Gateway Building at 1200 E. Marshall St., and the patient and visitor parking deck that serves the Main and North Hospitals is at 529 N. 12th St.

A mailing address does not tell you the locality. On map data, Henrico Doctors’ and St. Mary’s sit in Henrico County, Johnston-Willis sits in Chesterfield County, and Chippenham and the VCU campus are inside the city of Richmond. That matters for taxes, services and schools, so confirm it for any address you are considering.

Because the starting points are approximations, treat each figure as a way to compare areas against each other and not as a promise about your own street. Mileages below come from an OpenStreetMap-based routing tool, run in October 2026, from the approximate center of each neighborhood to the hospital address. Moving the starting point a few blocks can change a figure by a mile or more.

Tuckahoe: about 1.5 miles to Henrico Doctors’

Tuckahoe, in Henrico County, has the shortest route to Henrico Doctors’ of the places in this guide: about 1.5 miles, mostly along Forest Avenue. St. Mary’s is the second option, about 3.1 miles by way of Forest Avenue, Patterson Avenue and Horsepen Road.

Wrong for: anyone who wants to walk to a hospital, since 1.5 miles is a drive for most people, and anyone who needs a city of Richmond address, because Tuckahoe is a Henrico County community.

Westhampton: about 1 mile to St. Mary’s

Westhampton has the shortest figure in this guide: about 1.0 mile to St. Mary’s on Bremo Road, mostly on Libbie Avenue. Henrico Doctors’ is about 3.0 miles, by way of Libbie Avenue, Patterson Avenue, Three Chopt Road and Skipwith Road. Because St. Mary’s sits across the county line from this city neighborhood, you get a short route to a hospital in a different locality than your address.

Wrong for: a buyer whose list is limited to the south side or downtown campuses. Neither Chippenham nor VCU was measured from here.

Forest Hill: about 3.3 miles to Chippenham

Forest Hill is in the city of Richmond, and the route to Chippenham is about 3.3 miles along Forest Hill Avenue and Jahnke Road. Forest Hill is one of two places in this guide measured to Chippenham, and the route is short on turns: one named avenue, then one named road.

Wrong for: a buyer who wants a hospital inside 2 miles. Nothing in this guide offers that for Chippenham.

Stratford Hills: about 3.7 miles to Chippenham

Stratford Hills is also in the city. The route to Chippenham runs about 3.7 miles by way of Cheverly Road, Custis Road, Chippenham Parkway and Jahnke Road. Johnston-Willis is about 6.3 miles from the same starting point by the routing tool, so Chippenham is the nearer of the two.

Wrong for: a buyer who wants a hospital inside 3 miles, or one who wants two hospitals within a short drive. From this starting point only one of the five is under 4 miles.

Bon Air: about 2.4 miles to Johnston-Willis

Bon Air, in Chesterfield County, is about 2.4 miles from Johnston-Willis by way of Old Bon Air Road, Robious Road, Sturbridge Drive and Midlothian Turnpike. Chippenham is about 3.7 miles by way of Old Bon Air Road, Rockaway Road, Buford Road and Jahnke Road. That gives Bon Air two hospital options inside 4 miles by this method.

Wrong for: a buyer who needs a Richmond address, and anyone who wants VCU close by, which was not measured from here.

Jackson Ward: about 1.2 miles to the VCU campus

Jackson Ward is the closest neighborhood in this guide to VCU Medical Center: about 1.2 miles to the North Hospital address on West Marshall Street, which becomes East Marshall Street on the way. The route runs on downtown streets rather than a highway.

Wrong for: a buyer who wants to reach a hospital without driving through downtown streets, and anyone who needs a suburban campus such as Henrico Doctors’ or Johnston-Willis nearby.

The Fan: about 3.8 miles to the VCU campus

The Fan sits about 2.2 miles from the VCU campus in a straight line, which is a figure we computed from map coordinates, but the routing tool’s drive is about 3.8 miles by way of North Meadow Street and the Downtown Expressway. The straight-line figure is a good reminder to measure by road.

Wrong for: a buyer who reads a map pin and assumes a short drive. Test the actual route at your own hours.

Why these seven, and which areas are missing

These are neighborhoods that have their own page on our site and that sit within a few miles of one of the five campuses. They are not the only ones. Short Pump, Glen Allen and Innsbrook in the western part of Henrico County, and Midlothian in Chesterfield County, were left out because we did not measure them, not because they fall short. Parham Doctors’ Hospital, a sister campus of Henrico Doctors’ that its own page lists, would change the picture for northwest Henrico, and we did not measure to it. If you want a neighborhood added to your own comparison, a saved search on the property page lets you choose any area you like.

The numbers side by side

Neighborhood Hospital Road miles Main roads on the route
Tuckahoe Henrico Doctors’ 1.5 Forest Avenue
Westhampton St. Mary’s 1.0 Libbie Avenue
Forest Hill Chippenham 3.3 Forest Hill Avenue, Jahnke Road
Stratford Hills Chippenham 3.7 Custis Road, Chippenham Parkway, Jahnke Road
Bon Air Johnston-Willis 2.4 Old Bon Air Road, Robious Road, Midlothian Turnpike
Jackson Ward VCU Medical Center 1.2 West Marshall Street
The Fan VCU Medical Center 3.8 North Meadow Street, Downtown Expressway

What to check before you rely on any of this

Drive the route at the hours you would actually use it, including a weekday rush hour, because the mileages above are distances and not travel times. Look up the services you care about on the hospital’s own site, because a campus name does not tell you which departments it has. Ask your health plan which hospitals are in network, since location does not decide that. Also confirm visiting rules and parking on the campus itself. If you are still sorting out a budget, our preferred lenders page lists lenders we work with, and the buy with us page explains how we work with buyers.

If distance to a hospital is only one of several things you are weighing, our guides to the best neighborhoods for retirees in Richmond and to buying in The Fan use other yardsticks.

Frequently asked questions

Does living near a hospital mean an ambulance reaches me faster?

Not necessarily. Which unit responds depends on where the closest available crew is when you call, not on which hospital is nearest your house. In an emergency, call 911. This guide measures road distance to hospital addresses only.

Which Henrico Doctors’ campus does this guide use?

The street address on the hospital’s own page, 1602 Skipwith Road. That page also names Parham Doctors’ Hospital and Retreat Doctors’ Hospital as sister campuses, which this guide does not measure to.

Are there other hospitals to search around?

Yes. The Bon Secours page for Richmond also lists Richmond Community Hospital at 1500 N. 28th Street in Richmond, Memorial Regional Medical Center at 8260 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville, and St. Francis Medical Center at 13710 St Francis Blvd in Midlothian. Those were not measured here.

Will my phone’s directions match these mileages?

Probably not to the tenth of a mile. Each figure runs from the approximate center of a neighborhood, so a house on the far edge can add a mile or more. Enter a specific address into a map app and drive the route yourself.

Should I worry about sirens or traffic near a hospital?

Visit the street on a weekday morning, an evening and a weekend before you decide. Noise and traffic vary block by block, and a map cannot tell you how a particular street sounds.

Does the county matter when I compare these neighborhoods?

Yes. Henrico County, Chesterfield County and the city of Richmond each run their own services, taxes and school systems. Compare the specific rules for the locality your address falls in, not the mailing address, since several hospitals here use a Richmond mailing address.

Does this guide say anything about home values near hospitals?

No. It uses no sales data, so it makes no price claim. It also says nothing about the quality of care at any hospital.
