Whole Foods will open its first Chesterfield County store on November 19, 2026, at Midlothian Depot, the mixed-use project at Midlothian Turnpike and Alverser Drive, according to Richmond BizSense. Reporter Jack Jacobs covered the announcement in an October 23 article. This post is our own summary, with local context added. More coverage lives in our Richmond area news posts.
What BizSense reported about the store
The store covers 36,000 square feet and gives the chain three Richmond-area locations, after Short Pump and Sauer Center, per BizSense. The article lists meat and seafood counters, a wellness and beauty section and a bakery, plus local products from Blanchard’s Coffee, Don Sebastian salsas and Hardywood beer. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and India Lawal is the store team leader. The address BizSense gives is 1051 Steam Ave.
Our Short Pump page covers the area where the chain already has a Henrico store.
The rest of Midlothian Depot
The retail buildings total 87,500 square feet, and developer SJC Ventures told BizSense the center is largely leased with most construction done. Tenants open or expected by year-end include Dave’s Hot Chicken, J.Crew, Warby Parker and Lovesac, while Cheba Hut and an AT&T store are already open. BizSense reports SJC bought the 13-acre site for $16 million in 2023, started construction in early 2025, and is building a $100 million project with L.F. Jennings as general contractor.
Midlothian Turnpike is U.S. Route 60, a state-maintained road, so the Virginia Department of Transportation is the place to check for road work and traffic notices around the center. Traffic counts and any turn-lane changes are not part of the BizSense report, so we have nothing to add on them.
The townhomes at the site
Housing is part of the project. BizSense reports Eastwood Homes is building 60 for-sale townhomes at Midlothian Depot, with seven finished so far and prices starting in the high $500,000s. That price is the builder-side figure BizSense reported in October 2026 for those townhomes only, not a market statistic for Midlothian. HOA terms, lot details and what else may be built nearby were not in the article, so confirm each of those in writing before you make an offer.

What a grocery opening changes for a home search
A new store changes your daily errands, and it can change the traffic on the roads around it. It does not tell you what a house will sell for. Before you rely on a nearby grocery in a buying decision, drive the route at the hours you would actually shop. Our post on neighborhoods near a major shopping center shows how to weigh convenience against traffic, and our Stony Point Village post covers a grocery-anchored center on the other side of the county near Bon Air. For walkable errands in general, see our grocery walkability guide.
