Fredericksburg sits about 60 miles north of Richmond on I-95, and it is the region’s best day trip for Civil War history. Four battlefields, a handful of preserved houses and a compact historic downtown on the Rappahannock River all fit into one long day, and fall is comfortable weather for walking the ground. The best news for a budget: the park has no entrance fee. This guide covers the drive, the current fall 2026 hours from the National Park Service, one important closure to know about before you go, and how to plan the day.
The Drive: I-95 North
From Richmond, you take I-95 North past Glen Allen and through Hanover County, where the interstate passes Ashland, before crossing into Caroline and Spotsylvania counties. The trip takes about an hour in light traffic. I-95 is the region’s most congested corridor, and Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and holiday weekends can double the time, so go early and come back after the evening rush. Check 511 Virginia for incidents before you leave. Many Richmond-area commuters make this drive in the other direction every day; our guide to Richmond neighborhoods for commuting north to Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia and D.C. shows which areas make that easier, and our page on moving to Richmond from Fredericksburg compares the two markets.
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park
The National Park Service runs a large park here with four battlefields, according to the park’s plan-your-visit page: Fredericksburg (December 1862), Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. Each has its own driving tour and walking trails, and downloadable maps and brochures are on the NPS site. Historic structures within the park include Chatham Manor, Ellwood Manor, the “Stonewall” Jackson Death Site and Salem Church. The park’s address is 120 Chatham Ln in Fredericksburg.
Admission is free. The park states that an entrance pass is not required, so you can visit all four battlefields without buying anything.
Fall 2026 Hours and a Closure to Know About
The park’s hours page lists a fall schedule that began August 3. The most important detail: the Fredericksburg Battlefield visitor center is closed for a maintenance project. The bookstore there is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with ranger assistance, so you can still get maps and questions answered. The Chancellorsville Battlefield visitor center is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ranger-led walking tours run at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at both Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Chatham Manor’s main building is open and staffed Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and its grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The grounds at the Jackson Death Site, Ellwood and Spotsylvania Court House are open sunrise to sunset, but the buildings at the Jackson Death Site (plantation office) and Ellwood (main building) are closed. Schedules change, so confirm on the NPS page the morning you go.
What that means in practice: this is a better weekend trip than a weekday trip, because the walking tours and Chatham Manor’s interior are only available Saturday and Sunday. On a weekday you can still walk the grounds and drive the tours, but you will not get a ranger walk or a look inside Chatham.
Do you drive I-95 north often?
Buyers who work or travel north of Richmond have specific neighborhoods that make the drive easier. Set up a saved search for homes in northern Henrico and Hanover and we will send new listings on that side of the region.
Historic Downtown Fredericksburg
Downtown Fredericksburg is compact and walkable, with restaurants, antiques shops, galleries and a riverfront trail on the Rappahannock. The street grid is 18th-century, and many of the buildings are original. It is a comfortable place to spend an afternoon after the battlefield: park once, walk Caroline Street, and eat somewhere with a patio if the weather is good. Parking is easier on weekdays, and on weekends the closest garage is usually the best bet.
A Weekend Itinerary
Leave Richmond by 8 a.m. and arrive at the Fredericksburg battlefield in time for the 10:30 a.m. ranger walking tour on a Saturday or Sunday. After the walk, drive the battlefield tour, then have lunch downtown around noon. Spend an hour or two on Caroline Street or by the river, and then head to Chatham Manor, whose interior is open both weekend days, and walk the grounds. If you still have energy, the Chancellorsville visitor center is to the west of town, open daily, and a short stop there rounds out the day. Start back by about 4 p.m. to avoid the heaviest northbound and southbound traffic. If you would rather make it two shorter trips, do Fredericksburg downtown and the Fredericksburg battlefield one weekend, and Chancellorsville and the Wilderness another.
Tips for Fall
October is one of the best months for this trip: cooler air, leaf color on the wooded battlefields and fewer crowds than summer. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring water, since the trails have limited shade in open fields. Restrooms at select park locations operate 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, so plan stops accordingly.
