Day Trip From Richmond to the Northern Neck: Bald Eagles, Stratford Hall, Reedville and River Towns

Tidal marsh pools reflecting a blue and orange sunset sky

Between the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers, the Northern Neck is a long peninsula of farm fields, tidal creeks and small towns that most Richmonders drive right past on the way to somewhere else. It is roughly an hour to an hour and a half from Richmond depending on where you stop, and in the fall it is one of the most relaxed day trips in the region. This guide draws on the Northern Neck National Heritage Area’s own visitor listings to pick out stops that make sense for one long day.

The Drive

Most Richmond drivers take Route 360 east out of the city through Hanover County and the Tappahannock area, then turn onto Route 3 or Route 17 depending on the destination. Warsaw and the middle of the peninsula are about an hour and ten minutes out; Colonial Beach, Stratford Hall and Reedville sit farther, with Reedville at the tip of the Neck taking a good hour and a half. Roads are two-lane and slow in places, and farm equipment and beach traffic slow things on summer weekends. Check 511 Virginia before you set out. The start of the route runs through Hanover County and the eastern side of Henrico County, so it is easy to add a stop on the way home.

Caledon State Park and the Eagles

The Northern Neck National Heritage Area’s visitor site lists Caledon State Park as a National Natural Landmark with old-growth forest and bald eagle viewing. It is a good first stop if you like a walk: the eagles are the draw, and the state park system posts current trail conditions and hours. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation runs the state park system and lists park hours, trail maps and any parking fees. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Stratford Hall and Westmoreland State Park

Stratford Hall is a plantation on the Potomac side of the Neck, and the heritage area’s listings note that it hosts an annual First Africans Day commemoration honoring enslaved African ancestors, with the next one in 2027. Westmoreland State Park, opened in 1936 as one of Virginia’s original state parks, is nearby and has river access. The heritage area lists a 90th-anniversary festival there this fall celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps legacy; check the park’s page for the date and details before planning around it.

Love the water and open space?

Neighborhoods east and north of Richmond put the river country within a short drive. Set up a saved search for homes in eastern Henrico and Hanover and see new listings as they come up.

Reedville, Heathsville and Kinsale

Reedville is a historic fishing village at the tip of the peninsula and home to the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, according to the heritage area. Farther up the Neck, Heathsville has Rice’s Hotel and Hughlett’s Tavern, and Kinsale has Yeocomico Church, built around 1706. Each is a short stop, and you can string two or three together on a slow drive up the peninsula. Warsaw, near the middle of the Neck, has historic structures including The Saddlery, which dates to the early 1830s.

Colonial Beach, Dahlgren and Cider

At the top of the Neck, Colonial Beach is the site of the James Monroe Birthplace and Boyhood Home. Nearby, the Dahlgren Heritage Museum highlights the work of Dr. Gladys Mae West, a mathematician whose contributions to GPS are documented there. And for a drink at the end of the day, Ditchley Cider Works and Farm, a 162-acre property, produces hard cider. Check each stop’s hours before you go, since small museums often have limited fall schedules.

Planning a Loop

A workable loop is Caledon in the morning, lunch in a river town, a stop at Stratford Hall or Westmoreland in the afternoon, and a drive back through Tappahannock at sunset. If Reedville is your goal, plan a longer day or an overnight. Pair this trip with a weekend at home: our guides to the Historic Triangle and Charlottesville cover other directions, and our fall events guide covers what is on in town.

Why This Matters to Richmond Buyers

The Northern Neck sits outside our core market, but it is a popular destination for Richmond-area buyers looking for a river cottage or a retirement home. If you are curious about buying closer to Richmond with water access, the City of Richmond itself runs along the James. Our Buy With Us page explains how we work with buyers, and you can browse active listings any time.
