HCA has started construction on a $24.6 million expansion of the neuroscience center at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Chesterfield County, with completion set for summer 2027. Richmond BizSense reporter Jack Jacobs published the details on November 2, 2026.
Below is a short summary of that report, followed by what a hospital project like this does and does not tell you about the surrounding area.
The project in numbers
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Address | 1401 Johnston Willis Drive |
| Cost | $24.6 million |
| Neuroscience center size | Triples to 16,000 square feet |
| Construction start | Early October 2026 |
| Target completion | Summer 2027 |
| Hospital size | 292 beds, 530,000 square feet |
According to BizSense, the work adds two dedicated treatment rooms and a new MRI for neuroscience patients. It also upgrades the existing Gamma Knife and MRI-guided ultrasound systems and adds laser ablation surgery. Gilbane is the general contractor, with TMP as architect and WSP as engineer. The article does not report a job count.
Two local TV stations covered the groundbreaking as well. WTVR’s Joi Fultz reported that construction should take about 10 months, and WWBT’s Desiree Montilla reported the opening is expected next summer. Both ran on October 29, 2026.
Johnston-Willis is owned by HCA, a national hospital operator, and BizSense says HCA has held the hospital since 1969. This is a chain-owned facility, not a locally owned one.

The wider HCA picture in Chesterfield
BizSense adds that HCA opened an 11,000-square-foot freestanding emergency room at 9630 Iron Bridge Road in June 2026. It also plans a 60-bed hospital as part of the Nunnally Village project near Otterdale and Hull Street roads in Moseley, a plan we covered separately. County Board of Supervisors Chairman Mark Miller said, “HCA continues to expand access and care to different parts of our county.”
The hospital’s own HCA Virginia page lists its address as 1401 Johnston Willis Dr, Richmond, VA 23235, and describes the Neuroscience and Gamma Knife Center as first in Richmond.
What it means for homebuyers
This is an expansion of an existing hospital campus. The BizSense story does not say anything about new homes, road changes, traffic, or construction hours, so we will not guess at them. What you can take from it is a dated, funded project with a stated finish: summer 2027.
If you are shopping in Chesterfield County, treat the hospital as one fact about the county’s map, not a verdict on any street. Before you commit to a home, look up the exact address, then use the county’s Active Development and Zoning Cases page. It lets you search pending cases by case type, district or meeting, and shows a map of where they sit. The Planning Department can be reached at 804-748-1050 on weekdays.
Our community pages cover individual parts of the county, including Bon Air, Midlothian and Chesterfield. We have not verified how far any of them is from the hospital, so measure the drive for the address you are considering.
