Which Richmond-area neighborhoods have a museum, gallery or performance venue nearby? Six do, and each is tied below to a named venue whose address and details come from its own website: Carytown, Glen Allen, Jackson Ward, the Museum District, Westhampton and Windsor Farms. The list is alphabetical because we did not rank it, and there is no scoring method behind it.
Two limits to know up front. There is no public neighborhood-level dataset of drive or walk times to arts venues, so we did not measure distances. Check any listing’s address against the venue’s address before you count on a short trip. And this post makes no price claim: we did not analyze home prices near these venues, so there is no data block here. The picks span the city of Richmond and Henrico County.
Carytown: the Byrd Theatre and its Wurlitzer organ
The Byrd Theatre lists its address as 2908 W Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221. What sets it apart is the organ. According to the theatre’s page on the Mighty Wurlitzer, the instrument is one of about forty surviving theatre organs still in their original installation, with four keyboards and 17 ranks of pipes. The theatre says organist Bob Gulledge plays a live show before each movie, except the sensory-friendly screenings.
That gives a Carytown buyer a specific, checkable perk: a film venue with a live organ prelude, at an address you can map against any listing. Who it is wrong for: anyone who wants a quiet residential block and does not want to be near a busy commercial street. The theatre’s address says nothing about a particular block, so visit on a weekend evening and ask about parking. Our guide to neighborhoods where you can walk to a brewery uses the same approach for another evening-out anchor.
Glen Allen: the Cultural Arts Center at 2880 Mountain Road
The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen gives its address as 2880 Mountain Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060. Its own site says admission to the Center is free and lists four galleries, an art-class program with classes starting at $25, and a performance calendar. On October 19, 2026, the homepage showed hours of Monday through Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm, with the box office on weekday hours and extra hours for events.
For a buyer in the Glen Allen area of Henrico, the pitch is range: a gallery visit on a free afternoon, a class for an adult or a teen, or a ticketed concert in the evening, all under one roof. Who it is wrong for: someone who wants to walk to the venue from home. The address is on Mountain Road, and we have not measured walking distances, so map the route from any listing you like. If you want the broader area first, start with the Henrico County page.
Jackson Ward: heritage sites rather than a ticketed hall
Jackson Ward’s arts story is a history story, and the National Park Service is the best source for it. The NPS page for the Hippodrome Theater gives its address as 528 North Second Street, says it opened around 1914 and says performers including Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington played its stage. The same page lists the building as privately owned and not open to the public. The NPS also describes the Maggie L. Walker visitor center on its national historic site page as a gateway into Walker’s life in Jackson Ward, and the site offers house tours.
So the honest framing is that Jackson Ward pairs a National Park Service site you can tour with a landmark you can see from the street. Who it is wrong for: a buyer who wants a currently operating performance hall within a short trip and nothing else. The NPS lists the Hippodrome as not open to the public, so check current event listings before you count it. Pair this with the guide to the city’s big gardens and green spaces if you want a second kind of outing.

The Museum District: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts gives its address as 200 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Its plan-your-visit page says the museum is open 365 days a year and that general admission is always free. That is a rare thing to be able to write about an anchor institution: a buyer in the Museum District can plan an hour at the museum without buying a ticket.
We cover the neighborhood itself in more depth in our Museum District guide. Who it is wrong for: a buyer who dislikes visitor traffic near a major museum. The museum’s own page includes driving directions and notes on where visitors enter, and that is worth knowing before you buy nearby. Ask about event days when you tour a home nearby, and read the community page before you decide.
Westhampton: the Modlin Center for the Arts
The Modlin Center for the Arts lists its address as 410 Westhampton Way. According to its about page, it is the home for the arts and creative experiences on the University of Richmond campus, with a box office, discounts and accessibility information on its site. It is a season-based performance venue on a campus rather than a museum that opens its doors every day, so check its calendar before you plan around it.
For a Westhampton buyer, the value is a programmed calendar of performances a short way from home. Who it is wrong for: someone who wants a venue open every day with no tickets, which is what a free museum offers. The Modlin Center is not that. Also remember that a campus venue follows the university’s event schedule, not a public one, so confirm what is open to the public on the date you care about.
Windsor Farms: Agecroft Hall and Gardens
Agecroft Hall and Gardens gives its address as 4305 Sulgrave Road, Richmond, VA 23221, which puts it in Windsor Farms. Its site says the house was taken piece by piece from Lancashire, England and reassembled in 1920s Richmond, and that Agecroft will celebrate 100 years in Virginia in 2026. It also promotes its gardens as part of a visit.
That makes Windsor Farms the pick for a house museum and garden rather than a stage. Who it is wrong for: a buyer who wants evening performances close to home, since Agecroft is a historic house and garden, not a concert hall. If a Windsor Farms home interests you, read our guide to the neighborhood’s civic association rules too, because living near a landmark and living under neighborhood rules are separate questions.
How to use this list when you tour
Treat each venue as a starting point for four checks. First, map the listing address against the venue address and measure the trip yourself. Second, pull the venue’s calendar and note how many evenings a month bring crowds. Third, ask your agent about parking on event nights for the street you are considering. Fourth, read the neighborhood’s community page and any civic association rules before you fall for a block. None of these checks cost anything, and each one turns a nice-sounding anchor into a fact about a particular house.
If you are early in the process, our buyer page explains how we work with buyers, and recently sold homes show what has actually closed in an area. You can also meet our team.

Frequently asked questions
Which of these venues has free admission?
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts says general admission is always free, and the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen says admission to the Center is free. Performances and classes at the Cultural Arts Center are ticketed or paid, and class prices start at $25 according to its homepage on October 19, 2026.
Is the Byrd Theatre organ played at every showing?
The theatre says organist Bob Gulledge plays a live show before each movie, except the sensory-friendly screenings. Check its showtimes calendar for changes.
Can I visit the Hippodrome in Jackson Ward?
The National Park Service page for the Hippodrome Theater lists the building as privately owned and not open to the public. The NPS does offer house tours at the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, also tied to Jackson Ward.
What is Agecroft Hall?
According to its own site, Agecroft Hall and Gardens is a historic house taken piece by piece from Lancashire, England and reassembled in 1920s Richmond. The site says it will celebrate 100 years in Virginia in 2026 and promotes its gardens as part of a visit.
How did you rank these neighborhoods?
We did not. The list is alphabetical, and each pick is tied to one named venue with an address from the venue’s own website. There is no scoring method behind the order.
How far is each venue from the neighborhood?
We did not measure distances, because no public neighborhood-level dataset of drive or walk times to arts venues exists for this region. Use each venue’s address and a listing’s address on a map to measure the trip yourself.
Do homes near these venues cost more?
We did not analyze prices for this post and make no claim either way. Our recently sold page shows homes that have actually closed, which is a better starting point than any generalization about proximity to a venue.
When is the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen open?
On October 19, 2026, its homepage listed Monday through Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm, with the box office on weekday hours and the building also open during special events.
