Richmond-Area Neighborhoods for a Westbound I-64 Commute: Short Pump, West Creek, Goochland and Toward Charlottesville

If your commute runs west on I-64 toward Short Pump, West Creek, Goochland or Charlottesville, the western Henrico neighborhoods near the Parham Road, Gaskins Road and Broad Street exits start you closest to the city’s jobs and services, and about 54 to 57 interstate miles from the Route 250 exit east of Charlottesville. Goochland exits cut that run by roughly 5 to 30 more miles, but it costs you distance from everything east of Short Pump and, in two places, a Mission Realty community page we do not have yet.

No public dataset gives neighborhood-level drive times on this corridor, so we do not quote any. Instead we use the one thing you can check yourself: VDOT’s I-64 exit list, which numbers exits by the nearest mile marker. Subtract one exit number from another and you have the approximate interstate miles between them. It leaves out ramps, local roads and traffic, and every figure can be off by about a mile at each end.

The westbound exit ladder

Every exit below is on VDOT’s list. The two right-hand figures are interstate miles to exit 124 (Route 250) and exit 118 (Route 29), both of which VDOT lists in Albemarle County. We picked them as two Charlottesville-area reference points, not as recommendations.

Exit Road (as VDOT lists it) County (VDOT) Miles to exit 124 Miles to exit 118
181 Parham Road Henrico 57 63
180 Gaskins Road Henrico 56 62
178 Route 250, Broad Street Henrico 54 60
177 Interstate 295 Henrico 53 59
175 Route 288 Goochland 51 57
173 Route 623 Goochland 49 55
167 Route 617 Goochland 43 49
159 Route 522 Louisa 35 41
152 Route 629 Goochland 28 34
148 Route 605 Goochland 24 30

Source: VDOT I-64 exit list, read November 3, 2026. The subtraction is ours. VDOT’s own Route 623 interchange study page backs up the spacing: it puts exit 173 two miles west of Route 288 (exit 175) and six miles east of Route 617 (exit 167), which matches the subtraction.

How the list below is ordered

East to west by the exit you would most likely use, starting at Parham Road. It mirrors our eastbound I-64 guide, which runs the other way. Where a neighborhood could use two exits, we name both. Several of these areas are large, so the right exit depends on your street. Put the listing address into a live map before you trust our pairing.

Tuckahoe: Parham Road and Gaskins Road, south of the interstate

Tuckahoe is the easternmost pick and the one with the most city-side options. Exit 181 (Parham Road) and exit 180 (Gaskins Road) are the two interchanges to check, and from either one you are 56 or 57 interstate miles from exit 124. That extra mile or two over Short Pump buys you a shorter run back toward the rest of Henrico County on the days your work is not out west.

Wrong for: a five-day commute to Goochland or Charlottesville where every mile counts. You start at the far end of the ladder.

Glen Allen: north of I-64, several ways on

Glen Allen covers a wide area north of the interstate, so it has no single exit. Depending on the street, Parham Road (exit 181) or the Interstate 295 interchange (exit 177) may be the faster way onto westbound I-64. That is a 4-mile spread on the ladder, which is why a Glen Allen address needs checking on a map more than any other pick here.

Wrong for: anyone who wants a short surface leg before the interstate. From much of Glen Allen you drive a few miles of local road first.

Innsbrook: Gaskins Road at exit 180

Innsbrook, where our own office sits on Cox Road, connects to I-64 at exit 180 (Gaskins Road) or exit 178 (Broad Street). It is a fit when your job is in the office parks here and your second earner drives west. Our guide to commuting to West End office parks covers the office-park side of that equation.

Wrong for: buyers who want a detached house on a large lot. Innsbrook is built around offices, so check what housing types are listed before you tour.

West Broad Village: on Broad Street at exit 178

West Broad Village sits on Broad Street (Route 250), which meets I-64 at exit 178. That is 54 interstate miles to exit 124 and the shortest surface leg on this list for most addresses in the area. Exit 177, the Interstate 295 interchange, is one mile further west.

Wrong for: anyone who dislikes retail traffic on the way to the ramp. Broad Street is the main shopping road in this part of Henrico.

Short Pump: the busiest interchange on the ladder

Short Pump uses the same exit 178. VDOT’s Short Pump area transportation study page names capacity, congestion and safety as the needs, and its preferred package includes a new diverging diamond interchange on I-64 at North Gayton Road. The page also says the study is complete and the project has no funding yet for design or construction, so do not buy on the promise of a new ramp.

Wrong for: a commuter whose top priority is a quiet, predictable on-ramp. VDOT itself lists congestion as a need here.

Twin Hickory and Wyndham: north of Broad, via Pouncey Tract or Nuckols Road

Twin Hickory and Wyndham sit north of Short Pump. You reach westbound I-64 by heading south to Broad Street and exit 178, or by taking Interstate 295 from its Nuckols Road interchange, which the VDOT Short Pump page names. Both routes add surface or interstate miles before the ladder above even starts, and Wyndham, farther north, adds the most.

Wrong for: a daily Charlottesville commute. Most addresses in these two start well north of I-64.

West Creek: Route 288 at exit 175

West Creek is an employment area in eastern Goochland County on the Route 288 side of the county line, and exit 175 is the I-64 interchange with Route 288. We do not have a West Creek community page, so for homes nearby see our Goochland and Short Pump pages. If West Creek is your destination rather than your home, our posts on neighborhoods near large employer campuses, the Route 288 corridor and Eli Lilly’s West Creek groundbreaking are the better starting points.

Wrong for: anyone expecting a neighborhood with homes in it. Treat West Creek as a destination and shop the areas around it.

Manakin-Sabot and Centerville: Route 623 at exit 173

Exit 173 is Route 623, Ashland Road. VDOT’s study page places it about one mile north of the Route 250 and Route 623 intersection and lists the Hickory Haven Park and Ride lot at the interchange. Manakin-Sabot and Centerville are two Goochland communities in this part of the county, and a map will tell you which exit suits a given street. We do not have community pages for either yet, so use our Goochland County overview and the nearest pages we do have, Goochland and Short Pump. From exit 173 it is 49 interstate miles to exit 124. VDOT’s page also says earlier studies found long delays and queuing at the ramp intersections here.

Wrong for: a buyer who wants to walk to shops or assumes every listing has the same utilities. Check each home for public water and sewer versus a well, using our guide to public water and sewer versus well.

Goochland, farther west: Route 617 and beyond

Past exit 173, VDOT lists Route 617 (exit 167), Route 629 (exit 152) and Route 605 (exit 148) in Goochland County, plus Route 522 (exit 159), which it lists in Louisa County. From exit 148 you are about 24 interstate miles from exit 124. This is the shortest Charlottesville run on the ladder and the longest drive back to Short Pump. Our Goochland page covers the area, and if land is the draw, start with homes with acreage.

Wrong for: anyone whose commute flips east some days. Every exit west of Route 288 adds miles back toward Richmond.

Check the road, not just the ladder

Before you rely on any route, look at 511 Virginia, VDOT’s live traffic and work-zone map, at the hour you would leave. Then drive it twice on weekdays. If your trip to Charlottesville is occasional rather than daily, our Richmond to Charlottesville day trip guide covers the weekend version. If you would rather not drive every day, see our guide to park-and-ride and express bus options.

When you are ready, browse current listings, read how we work with buyers, or line up financing with our preferred lenders.

Westbound I-64 commute questions

Why don’t you give drive times to Charlottesville?

No public dataset gives neighborhood-level drive times on this corridor, and a single number would hide the hour, the weather and any work zone. Exit numbers are fixed and anyone can check them on VDOT’s list. Time your own route at your real hour instead.

Are the interstate miles exact?

No. VDOT numbers I-64 exits by the nearest mile marker, so subtracting two exit numbers gives approximate interstate miles that can be off by about a mile at each end. They also leave out ramps and local roads.

Is there a park and ride lot on the westbound side?

VDOT’s Route 623 interchange study page lists the Hickory Haven Park and Ride lot at exit 173 and mentions a future park and ride lot in the study area. Confirm current capacity and any bus service before you plan around it.

Is the North Gayton Road interchange being built?

Not yet. VDOT’s Short Pump area study page includes a new diverging diamond interchange on I-64 at North Gayton Road in its preferred package, but says the study is complete and the project has no funding for design or construction.

Is I-64 tolled west of Richmond?

VDOT’s Toll Roads in Virginia site lists three Richmond-area toll facilities: Pocahontas 895, the Powhite Parkway Extension and the RMTA system. None of them is this stretch of I-64. Our separate toll-commute guide covers the Powhite Parkway and Downtown Expressway.

Which exit is closest to the Goochland County line?

VDOT lists exit 177, the Interstate 295 interchange, in Henrico County and exit 175, Route 288, in Goochland County. So the county line falls between those two interchanges on I-64.

What if my job moves back toward Richmond later?

Then the ladder works against you. From exit 167, Route 617, it is about 14 interstate miles east to exit 181, Parham Road, before you reach the western Henrico exits, and from exit 148 it is about 33. If a job change is likely, weigh the eastbound miles as heavily as the westbound ones.

Why are Manakin-Sabot and Centerville not linked to their own pages?

We do not have community pages for them yet. Until we do, the Goochland County overview and our Goochland and Short Pump pages are the closest guides, and we can still include both areas in a saved search.
